Fund Raisers
Every year we host a variety of fund raisers. The funds earned go toward adding new books to the library as well as buying supplies to cover and process the books we buy or receive in donation. Since the cost of these supplies has gone up considerably over the last few years, we find ourselves buying fewer books, but we are extremely blessed to have so many families who donate books outright.
In the fall, we host the Scholastic Book Fair during the Fall Chili Supper. It is a labor intensive event, comparatively, for the amount of money we earn, but we usually have a really good turn out to buy books. Without the volunteer efforts of Melissa Mallicoat, I don't think we'd be able to put this on at all. She is an amazing help to us! Because of the fact that we do work so hard on this in comparison to other more lucrative fund raisers, we often revisit whether we should host this or not and will continue to reevaluate based on how well our other, easier fund raisers earn. Many times, when we have evaluated, we have had parents comment on how much they enjoy the event and this is taken into consideration.
Twice a year, we also host a quarter sale. At this event, we sell all the books that were donated through the year which are in fair to poor condition and cannot be covered with our supplies. Sometimes we also sell newer books if we have had several copies donated. We also cull out books from our shelves which are worn out and/or we've had a newer copy donated. This is a great sale, especially since we see copies of books donated back to us year after year. We usually earn quite a bit off this sale and the kids have a lot of fun spending their quarters. It also works well as a library time event during the weeks before Christmas break or Easter Break when we do not check out books. Many students walk away with a stack of books they're excited to read over their break.
In the past, we have also had evenings at Downtown Book and Toy or Barnes and Noble where a portion of an evening's sale was donated to St. Peter Interparish School. We did not have a good experience with Downtown Book and Toy, but we hope to do another sale with Barnes and Noble in the near future, especially if we drop the scholastic sale. They have been very good to us and have the space to organize a pretty fun social event that people enjoy.
In addition, we are looking at a few other options. We do not want to clutter the school calendar with too many fund raisers, but we are looking at other ideas to replace the Scholastic Book Fair.
