8th Grade Study hall swapped out with 7th Grade Science.
2L: We talked about how you should always read the first few pages of a book because books can sometimes have ugly covers, but the story is still a great story. Then I showed them an ugly cover... you know, one made in the 70's, the ones we still remember by how cool they were when we first saw them... Those are ancient history! But this book won a Mark Twain Award in 1982. We read the first chapter of "The Boy Who Saw Big Foot" by Marian T. Place. When the first chapter ended a bunch of hands shot into the air. The kids were so excited by the story that I had 6 kids compete in a "Guess What Number" war to see who got to check it out first.
1L and 1P: We read "Nate the Great and the Mushy Valentine." Yep it was a day of Ewws and Ugggs. Nate The Great discovers his dog Sludge has been given a Valentine. Nate sure doesn't want a Valentine. He's on the case to find out who left it. The kids had fun with this one and several kids left clutching Nate The Great mysteries to take home tonight.

4B came in to hear another tale of Dear America. I've read the first chapter of several of these stories this year. In each book a young person keeps a journal as they survive one of America's challenging moments in history. The books are fairly fast reads, especially for this crew, but challenges them to think of history in a completely personal way, learning through edge-of-the-seat action.
